Our history highlights

1920's - 1940's

  • The Nashville Alumni Chapter was chartered on April 24, 1926.
  • Dr. Henry H. Walker became the chapter's first Polemarch in 1926.
  • In 1933, Dr. Henry H. Walker was appointed Southern Province Polemarch.
  • Dr. Henry H. Walker was elected to the Grand Board of Directors in 1945.
  • In 1946, William J. Gupton Sr. of Nashville (TN) Alumni Chapter was appointed the South Central Province Polemarch (SCP), serving as the 6th SCP Polemarch from 1947-1949.
  • On December 27-30, 1949, Nashville co-hosted the thirty-ninth Kapp Alpha Psi Fraternity Grand Chapter meeting.
  • During the Grand Chapter meeting in 1949, Dr. Henry H. Walker became a candidate for the Laurel Wreath award, the highest award given in the fraternity.

1950's - 1970's

  • In 1955, the Nashville (TN) Alumni Chapter purchased the fraternity house located at 901 26th Ave. North from the Grand Chapter for approximately $10,000.
  • Members of the Nashville Alumni Chapter played significant roles in the demonstrations during the Nashville lunch counter sit-ins in downtown Nashville in February 1960.
  • In 1976, the fraternity house at 901 26th Ave. North was remodeled.
  • Nashville Alumni initiate, and first black four star general Brigadier General Daniel “Chappie” James of the U.S. Air Force, was voted the 27th Laurel Wreath recipient at the 61st Grand Chapter meeting in 1977. In February 1978 he passed away. Grand Polemarch H.H. Holloway presented the award posthumously at the 62nd Grand Chapter meeting in Chicago, IL. in 1979.

1980's - 2000's

  • Philanthropy was the key in 1983. The H.C. Hardy annual Easter egg hunt, the annual Thanksgiving basket give-away to the needy, and the annual Christmas party for the kids were all established in 1983.
  • Over 1000 people attended The annual Black & White Ball, hosted by the Nashville (TN) Alumni Chapter at the Municipal Auditorium in 1989.
  • Members of Nashville Alumni invested in property at 901 Cowan St. and called it the Kappa Kastle in 1991. It was the chapters’ official fraternity house which moved from 901 26th Ave. North.  At the time, It was the largest Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity house in the country.
  • On July 4-8, 1993, Nashville (TN) Alumni Chapter co-hosted the 71st Grand Chapter meeting.
  • The property at 901 Cowan St. was sold and the chapter moved back to 901 26th Ave. North in late 1993.
  • In 1996, the Nashville Guide Right Foundation (NGRF) was established. The NGRF is the tax exempt charitable arm of the chapter.
  • In 2001, the residence of Brother Dr. Ralph Hines, located at 3710 Tigerbelle Lane, Nashville, Tennessee, was bequeathed to the Nashville (TN) Alumni Chapter.  The 6000 square foot edifice currently serves as the chapter's official fraternity house.
  • National Co-Chairman of Music, Leonard H. Morton Sr. was conferred the Elder Watson Diggs award in 2001 at the Grand Chapter meeting in Cleveland, OH. for his continuous work with the fraternity. The Elder Watson Diggs award is the second highest award given by the fraternity.
  • In February 2007, the mortgage on the Hines property was retired in the amount of $34,000 with the help of the Nashville Alumni Chapter Kappa Kommittment fund started by Brother Leonard H. Morton.  The chapter held a mortgage burning ceremony at the February Meeting.
  • In March 2007 a new roof was put on the Hines property in the amount of $9,145.00
  • Nashville Alumni Chapter won Chapter of the Year in Chattanooga, TN in April 2008.
  • Hardwood floors were installed throughout the house.  Completion of the floors was in August 2008.  The cost was financed through the Kommittment fund and Polemarch James Dukes was instrumental in its completion.
  • Brother Dr. Leonard H. Morton Sr. was a Laurel Wreath candidate at the Conclave in St. Louis. in 2009 and in Indianapolis in 2011.  Unfortunately, he did not receive the minimum amount of votes to win the award.

2010's

 

  • Brother Leonard H. Morton Sr. was a Laurel Wreath candidate at the Conclave in St. Louis. in 2009 and in Indianapolis in 2011.  Unfortunately, he did not receive the minimum amount of votes to win the award.
  • Brother Dr. T.B. Boyd III was a Laurel Wreath candidate at the Conclave in Houston, TX. in 2013.  Unfortunately, he did not receive the minimum amount of votes to win the award.
  • Nashville Alumni Chapter won Chapter of the Year (Large Chapter) in 2009 and 2011 under Polemarch Gregory Clark.  The chapter also won Chapter of the Year in 2012 and 2014 under Polemarch Anthony Owens.
  • In February 2014, the chapter was deemed tax free with the state of Tennessee.  No longer will the chapter have to pay property tax on the property at 3710 Tigerbelle Dr.  That saves the chapter $7K per year in tax.
  • Four star Brigadier General Brother Dennis Via came to Nashville and spoke at our Nashville Guide Right scholarship luncheon in March 2014.  He is only the second African American four star general after our own Daniel “Chappie” James.
  • Long lost Past Polemarch Sterling Adams spoke at our 90th year chapter founders day celebration on April 24, 2016.  He had been in Tallahassee, FL.
  • In 2016, the 3710 Tigerbelle Dr. suffered an electrical fire that started from the unoccupied apartments downstairs on the side of the house closest to the Cumberland River.  Part of the upstairs and downstairs were damaged on that side of the house
  • In June 2017, John H. Ford was elected Polemarch
  • In January 2018, the chapter along with Hendersonville Alumni, Murfreesboro Alumni, and Brentwood Alumni hosted National Founders Day (NFD2018) here in Nashville at the Music City Sheraton
  • February 2019 marked Kappa Chapters 100th anniversary.  The Grand Polemarch Thomas Battles was on hand to celebrate.  Nashville Alumni Chapter has been the advising chapter for Kappa Chapter for many years.
  • The Nashville Alumni Chapter along with Kappa Chapter, Alpha Theta, and Nu Rho Chapters hosted the 74th Province Council Meeting in Nashville at the Music City Sheraton in March 2019.

2020's


  • March 10, 2020 was the last regular meeting at the fraternity house before the COVID-19 pandemic hit the country in a large scale. The pandemic lasted past the summer.  IHQ put a moratorium on elections and all fraternity functions.  Officers remained in office past the May time to choose new leaders.
  • Brother Leonard H. Morton Sr., Elder Watson Diggs Awardee, National Music Chairman, and 16th Past Polemarch of Nashville Alumni Chapter transitioned to
    Chapter Invisible on Sunday, July 12, 2020 at 3:48 pm at his residence with his family by his side.
  • On May 11,2021 the following chapter leadership was elected:  Polemarch Alger M. Studstill, Vice Polemarch Tillman Payne, Keeper of Records Ross Fleming III, Keeper of Exchequer Michael Majors, Strategus Darius Johnson, Lt. Strategus Bryant Crenshaw, Historian Larry Morris, Reporter Michael Roberson, Board of Directors Lee Allen, Fernado Diggs, Roderick Glatt, Anthony Smith, and Omaran Lee
  • April 15, 2022, the Nashville (TN) Alumni Chapter was put on cease and desist by Province Polemarch Leonard E. Clemons pending a fraternal investigation.  It is suspected that an unauthorized membership training academy activity (unauthorized probate show by 8 new members) had occurred.
  • On May 9, 2023 the following chapter leadership was elected:  Polemarch Tillman Payne, Vice Polemarch Anthony Smith, Keeper of Records Jermilton Woods, Keeper of Exchequer Fernando J. Diggs, Strategus Evan E. Swafford, Lt. Strategus Derrick Moore, Historian Larry Morris, Reporter Olen Marcus, Board of Directors Alfred Degrafinreid II, Anthony F. Smith, Gary M. Faulcon, Omarán D. Lee, and Fernando J. Diggs
  • After a long hiatus, the Chapter hosted a black & white formal ball on Saturday, May 18, 2024 at the Hutton Hotel in Nashville, TN.
  • On May 13, 2025 the following chapter leadership was elected:  Polemarch Tillman Payne, Vice Polemarch Anthony Smith, Keeper of Records Ryan Mabry, Keeper of Exchequer Michael Majors, Strategus Andrew Butler, Lt. Strategus Derrick Moore, Historian Larry Morris, Reporter Jeffrey Thomas, Board of Directors Rico X, Carey S. Birdine, Robert E. Gibbs, Robert L. Dobbs Jr., and Dexter O. Adams
  • On July 2, 2025, Brother Dr. John Cade was conferred the Elder Watson Diggs Award 87th Grand Chapter Meeting, at the Award Ceremony in Phoenix, AZ.  The Elder Watson Diggs award is the second highest award given by the fraternity.
